Using magnetic force to generate electricity?

So, I understand how electricity is generated via a generator by using magnetism to jump-start a movement in [loose] electrons (like in that of copper); however, how far do the electrons go and is there a finite amount? If they're moving along the atoms in the copper, what happens at the destination?
